Best Of The Boutiques

A trip to Edinburgh is incomplete without indulgence in a little retail therapy at the many designer and independent boutiques.

Edinburgh’s most prestigious shopping district is concentrated in the stunning Georgian New Town – home to luxury giants from Burberry to Mulberry, Louis Vuitton to Harvey Nichols. But throughout the city, smaller independents also thrive.

For original menswear – check out Scottish designer Kestin Hare’s boutique in Stockbridge. Collections draw upon Kestin’s extensive experience in the fashion industry to bring timeless classics with superb craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Another must visit is Dick’s, with its carefully curated selection of menswear and accessories from small, high-quality independent manufacturers. Local and international brands include Scottish cashmere house Begg & Co., luxury leisure wear from Orlebar Brown, and classic American outdoors outfitter Filson.

For men and women seeing a contemporary take on traditional Scottish design, we’d recommend a visit to Walker Slater. Renowned for their creative use of tweed – including authentic Harris Tweed woven in the Outer Hebrides – Walker Slater offer a made-to-measure service for suits and outwear, in an array of fabrics and colours. It’s the way to express a Scottish spirit in ultimate style.

For the best of independent luxury womenswear – head to the quaint and cobbled Thistle Street for a selection of exciting boutiques offering a relaxed and personal shopping experience. Kakao by K is a highlight; here find designer ranges rooted in a Scandinavian aesthetic – characterised by quality, simplicity, and innovative yet minimal styling.

Further along the same street is family-owned boutique Jane Davidson – boasting a host of awards and accolades, including ‘Most Stylish Retailer’ at the recent Scottish Style Awards. The store’s enviable edit of smaller contemporary designer brands includes British couturier Roland Mouret, cult denim label J Brand, plus avant-garde exclusives from notable Serbian fashion designer Roksanda.

Pam Jenkins is the perfect destination for women with a passion for high-end shoes, bags, jewellery and other accessories. This tiny store is tastefully decorated and offers genuine and personal service. On the list of brands to tempt you in are headline designers Christian Louboutin and Jimmy Choo.

Judy R Clark is a multi award-winning designer, with a particular flair for incorporating Harris tweeds, Scottish wools, Scottish lace, silks and antique cloths into her designs. This innovative use of fabrics and textures inspired us to commission Judy to design our Royal Mile uniforms and two of our luxury suites. Guests are encouraged to visit her Edinburgh studio where they can collaborate with the designer to create timeless, bespoke pieces of clothing to truly treasure.
