Life By The Water

Kuwait City’s proximity to the water has created an inextricable connection between Kuwaiti culture and the sea.

The annual Pearl Diving Festival pays tribute to the men who dedicated their lives to the pearling industry, once a pillar of Kuwait’s economy. The festival is a wonderful celebration of Kuwaiti traditions – even the clothing of today’s pearl divers is identical to that worn by their forefathers.

Yachting in Kuwait City is also extremely popular, with the bay considered to be a sailors’ paradise – given that the sea is rarely turbulent. Day trips to the islands offer a relaxing alternative to the city. Perhaps the most popular is Failaka, offering an interesting juxtaposition of peaceful beaches, ancient history and a quiet, introspective landscape.
